Ark Ayrton Primary Academy in Portsmouth is celebrating its recent Ofsted report, which has graded the school as good. The school was previously rated as ‘requires improvement’ at its last inspection in 2016.

The report praised the school’s leadership saying: ‘The headteacher’s strong vision is embraced by staff, governors and trustees. It flows from a deep understanding of the community that the school serves…Leaders display great passion for their work and the necessary resolve to succeed. Their determination is reflected in their unwavering belief that it is the right of every pupil to attend a ‘good school’.’

Ofsted inspectors also recognised the good behaviour of pupils in the school: ‘Pupils are polite and courteous towards each other and adults in the school. They behave well at break and lunchtimes, showing consideration towards others….They listen attentively to the class teacher and to each other. They collaborate well and are equally engaged when working independently.’

Another key finding from the inspection was the support the school provided for disadvantaged pupils: ‘Disadvantaged pupils do well at Ark Ayrton Academy. Over time, they are catching up with other pupils, in the school and nationally, because of the useful extra help that they receive.”

Headteacher, Anne Hibberd-Chapman said: “This is a huge achievement and recognition of everyone’s hard work and commitment in building a great school for our community. We are delighted that Ofsted have validated our work and recognised Ayrton as a good school in all areas. I would like to thank our amazing staff team, supportive parents, wonderful children and all those at Ark and the local governing body who have supported us along the way.”

Damian McBeath, Regional Director for London and Portsmouth primaries said: “This is a great achievement but is only just the start; for the staff and leaders this is recognition of the hard work and determination to really make a difference - and it is an indication of our ambitions to create truly exceptional schools serving a truly wonderful community. The pupils and parents have always known their school is a good school, now we are aiming to make it great.
